I have known many Christians who often devalue themselves. They tend to think they are not good enough or worthy enough and feel they need to work harder on their Christian conduct to become more Christ-like. However, that is a life of trying, not trusting, and trusting is relational. Second, as long as we focus on who we’re not, we will never fully understand who we are in Christ! This understanding is also relational. We are called to change our minds and live by faith. It involves hearing God, changing our perspective, and calling those things that are not as though they are.
Today, I want to encourage you to start thinking more highly of yourself! Yes, think more highly of yourself! In Romans 12:3, Paul tells us not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think, but he never says we shouldn’t think highly of ourselves at all! In fact, he urges us to think soberly—to regulate and protect ourselves from arrogance and pride—and to view ourselves according to the faith God has given us, according to who we are in Him!
The Greek word used here is interesting. “More highly than we ought to think” means the absence of humility. Jack Taylor once gave the best definition of biblical humility I think I have ever heard: “He’s God, and I am not!” Humility means living my life from the understanding that He is God and I am not. This is the true essence of a life surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus! It’s about trying less and surrendering more; it’s about leaning on grace—Christ in me, the hope of glory!
If we are in Christ, we have been given the privilege of being called the children of the Most High God! If we are the children of the Most High, it certainly changes our position in life, doesn’t it? Yes, it absolutely does! We have been seated with Christ in heavenly places! We are now heirs of the Kingdom of God! We have become the righteousness of God in Christ! We are far more than just old sinners, wearily going through life and trying to do our best for God!
We need to move beyond the old notion of being just old sinners saved by grace! Paul said that all of creation is eagerly awaiting the revelation of the sons and daughters of God. The night is far spent and the day is at hand! We are ministers of reconciliation and ambassadors of the King! We are here to be the praises of Him who has called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light! We were once not a people but have become THE PEOPLE OF GOD! A chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation! I mean, just, WOW!
Paul states in Ephesians 1:6 that we have been saturated with favor in Christ, accepted in the Beloved! You and I have incredible favor on our lives—favor with God and with man! Start confessing it; it’s absolutely true! Believe it, receive it, and walk in it! This is who you are: a child of the Most High God! You are more than a conqueror! You are blessed when you come in and when you go out! As AT always says, “You are God’s favorite!” Begin to act like it! Start to talk like it, and soon, you will begin to look like it! That’s faith in action; that is who you are in Christ!
Start focusing on who He says you are, and begin to walk and talk accordingly by faith! Believe it as you enter each new day filled with His mercy! There are great blessings ahead of you today and every day! In fact, He said in Romans 8 that the works have been prepared beforehand that you should walk in them! The Kingdom, in all its glory, is right in front of you! Get out there and be a hard-charging Kingdom seeker! You are a highly favored world-changing child of the Most High God!
