“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”Heb 12:2 BSB

In a world full of distractions and detours, it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters most. This is where the verse from Hebrews 12 really shines as a vital element for our daily lives. It brings to light that what we fix our eyes on usually shapes and determines our outcome in most situations.

In support of this truth, I often quote Psalm 34:3: “O magnify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together.” When we magnify something, it becomes the largest thing in our field of view. It shapes our thoughts, words, and even the direction of our lives. The writer of Hebrews 12 urges us to magnify Christ in the same way—by fixing our eyes on Him as our example. Our lives are meant to follow His pattern: the pattern of the firstborn among many brethren—Jesus.

Jesus came to show us how this works. He was never distracted by lesser things. You might be thinking, “But He was God!” That’s true, but He set that aside and became a man. He made Himself of no reputation. He became lower than the angels. Jesus was a man filled with the Holy Spirit—just like you and me. He is our perfect example of someone who fully yielded to God’s rule within.

He—the resurrected King now at the right hand of God—is the One we must focus on. To seek first the Kingdom is to seek the King Himself. This is our charge. Fixed eyes mean no glancing at other things or wandering in other directions. When you fix your eyes on something, you’re locked in. It’s numero uno in your mind, your desire, and your direction.

We are called to look to the One who is the author and finisher of our faith. Our faith begins and ends with His divine work in us. Our focus must be on Him alone, in all things. Jesus is the answer to every question. He alone satisfies the deepest longings of the human heart.

His life was totally given to the Father. He said He only did what He saw the Father do and only spoke what He heard the Father say. This is true closeness—an abiding relationship. Jesus was well-versed in the word, given to prayer and worship. He lived a life given to the mountain top experience: relational investment with the Father. When we focus on the King with this kind of devotion, everything in our lives becomes filtered through Him. We begin to see as He sees, think as He thinks, and do as He does. The outflow  is our spiritual DNA—it’s the family business: the ministry of the saints according to the Kingdom of God.

When our total focal point becomes Him, the outcome of all things in our path begins to work and flow on the plane of God’s divine will and purpose. It is the place where Heaven and Earth collide. It is the power of Heaven and the King’s perfect will being displayed through the lives of His children. It is the culmination of  Paul’s sentiment in Romans 12:2, “That we would prove, or display, the perfect will of God.” It becomes the fulfillment of what Jesus told us to pray, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”

Anything that we fix our eyes on outside of Him becomes a distraction that the enemy loves to meddle in. It’s what He has been doing since the very beginning! It is important that we do not begin to reason within ourselves about the mysteries of God or the problems of this world. That is exactly what the enemy wants. We are to trust wholeheartedly in who the Father is and what He is up to. His work is perfect. When we lean into Him, He leans into us. The result is His peace, love, and light on the path He has called us to. Our focus is meant to be Him alone. Everything we need to know is in our intimacy with Him.

As you go about your week, ask yourself: What am I magnifying today? Let’s make a conscious choice to fix our eyes on Jesus—letting Him become the largest thing in our field of view. When He is our focus, everything else finds its rightful place. As the old song says, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. Don’t get distracted—keep your eye on the prize. He is the author and finisher of your faith.
